Smith Lake Chapter
Eastern Navajo Agency

“Smith Lake Chapter is situated in the southeastern part of the Eastern Navajo Agency at an elevation of 7,890 ft. The climate is generally semi-arid and vegetation is sparse. The land around Smith Lake is filled with mesa, sloping flat areas also including many arroyos and canyons. Significant landforms are Hasta Butte and Tsdeshchii Mesa northwest from Smith Lake. The Continental Divide runs through a potion of Smith Lake."

The Smith Lake Chapter conducts monthly meetings to keep residents informed; residents have a forum to express their opinions to their Navajo Nation Council Delegate or to decide on matters concerning their chapter.

"In the early 1950’s, community leaders would conduct meetings wherever they could find accommodations, including a hosting family’s hogan or simply under a pinon tree. One large pinon tree in particular was removed during construction of state highway 371. The chapter was built in 1958 on 10 acres of land that was increased to 21.5 in 1989. A brief period of uranium mining in the 1970’s had had lasting effects on the land and people. In 1979 pre-school was built and a elementary school soon after in the 1980’s."
